Strada Imaging authors publish new chapter on low-cost automated rutting measurement
We are pleased to announce that our team, including Adil Qureshi, Muhammad Aamir Vakeel, Afaq Saeed and Zain Ul Mustafa, has co-authored a chapter entitled “Low-cost automated image-based rutting identification and measurement” in the book Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements VIII (CRC Press, 2024) with Aston University. Our team extensively did this research for almost 3 years by testing our methods on the actual road surfaces from various places.

What the research covers

The chapter presents a novel system that uses AI and computer-vision techniques to generate a precise 3D scan of pavement surfaces from 2D video images, thereby enabling accurate rutting measurements. Traditional rut-measurement methods require expensive laser-camera rigs and trained personnel; this new approach is designed to be more cost-effective and applicable to lower-volume roads

The system also handles other distress types (cracking, potholes, water-ponding) in the same workflow. Initial validation shows promising results when compared against actual measurements.

Why this matters

This research directly aligns with Strada Imaging’s mission to advance automated pavement-inspection technologies through computer vision and analytics. Its cost-effective, image-based approach creates opportunities to extend inspection coverage to lower-volume roads while enabling the use of lighter vehicles and sensors. Moreover, it highlights our team’s ability to contribute at the forefront of pavement-engineering research and to publish in recognized engineering and technology venues.

Next steps & opportunities

  • We should explore how the techniques described in this chapter can be integrated into our existing solutions (for example, the DeepRoad platform).
  • Consider a pilot deployment or case study leveraging this low-cost approach to gather field data and compare with existing methods.
  • Leverage the publication to engage with infrastructure agencies, road-asset managers, and potential clients who are seeking affordable inspection solutions.
  • Use this as a basis for thought-leadership content (blog posts, webinars, conference submissions) showcasing our research credentials.
